Abstract:

This study examines the relationship between socio-economic status (SES) and lifestyle among female students in the Department of Physical Education at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. SES has been identified as a critical determinant influencing various health and wellness outcomes. However, the specific impact of SES on lifestyle dimensions, including physical, emotional, nutritional, spiritual, and intellectual wellness, remains under-explored, especially among university students. A total of 85 female students participated in the study, categorized into lower, middle, and upper SES groups using the updated Kuppuswamy Socio-Economic Status Scale (2023). The Lifestyle Evaluation Inventory was used to assess various wellness variables, including physical activity, substance use, and overall well-being. A cross-sectional research design was employed, and data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA and post-hoc comparisons. The results revealed no significant differences in wellness measures across the SES groups, indicating that SES did not significantly influence lifestyle outcomes such as physical activity, substance use, emotional wellness, or intellectual engagement among the participants. These findings suggest that other factors beyond SES may play a more significant role in shaping the lifestyle and wellness of female university students and highlight the need for further investigation into other potential determinants.
